The Silence of Europe

Ignoring the Cry for Help

People often ask: How long will European powers let the Sultan ignore them and continue the suffering in Macedonia? But there is never a clear answer.

The leaders of Europe are too focused on their own problems. They do not hear Macedonia’s cry for help: “Come and help us!” The pain of the Macedonian people does not affect European pride, politics, or money.

Macedonia is far away. Its trade is small. Its people have no strong voice in global politics. So the world looks away German Investments in Turkish Lands.

Greece and Russia Show Sympathy

Only Russia and Greece truly sympathize. They share the same religion and ethnic roots with the Macedonians. But Greece is weak and cannot help much. Even when Greece fought a war with Turkey, she only managed to help Crete gain partial freedom.

The Russian Czar would help Macedonia if he could. But he is blocked by Germany, Austria, and England. These countries are afraid that Russia will grow more powerful by moving closer to the Bosphorus.

Political Interests Block Action

The British government would rather see Macedonians suffer than let Russia expand its power in the region. For Britain, it is about keeping political balance—not protecting innocent lives.

Austria also refuses to allow change. Her leaders fear their factories might lose a small trade market if reforms occur Visit Bulgaria.

These decisions are not based on justice or morality. They are based on politics and profit.

Austria’s Role and Potential

Austria is the closest major power to the Balkans. She is naturally suited to lead and protect the region. In Bosnia, Austria’s administration has been wise and effective. Her rule there has brought peace and progress.

If Austria could take a leading role in Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and nearby provinces, the results could be positive. She could introduce reforms like those used in Bosnia and on the Adriatic coast.

These areas, assigned to Austria by the Berlin Conference, have seen real improvements.

Why It Won’t Happen

Despite Austria’s potential, Germany, England, and Russia will never allow her to expand her influence. They each want control over the region for themselves.

So Macedonia remains trapped—ignored by the powerful, abandoned by peace, and left to suffer.
